The Reality: A Child's Hospital Visit in a Foreign Country

For a child, a hospital visit is already stressful — unfamiliar smells, strange instruments, people in masks, the anticipation of pain. Now multiply that stress by being in a country where no one speaks your language, the food is unfamiliar, and mom and dad are visibly anxious too.

Before the Visit: Preparation

1. Family assessment call — We learn about your child's age, personality, previous medical experiences, specific fears, and comfort objects
2. Social story delivery — A customized picture-story showing exactly what will happen: entering the hospital, meeting the doctor, the examination room, the treatment room, what recovery looks like
3. Comfort kit checklist — "Bring your child's favorite stuffed animal, a tablet with their favorite show, a comfort snack"
4. Parent preparation — We explain what the parent's role will be during each step, reducing parental anxiety (which children absorb)

During the Visit: Active Support

Registration & Waiting:

• The companion engages the child with age-appropriate activities (coloring, tablet games, I-spy in the waiting room)
• The parent focuses on comforting the child while the companion handles all administrative steps

Consultation:

• The companion translates in child-friendly language — not medical terminology
• For younger children: "The doctor wants to see how strong you are. Can you show them your muscles?"
• For older children: "The doctor will explain what they found and what they recommend. You can ask questions too."

Procedures (blood draw, injection, IV):

• Distraction-first approach: Bubbles for toddlers, guided imagery for preschoolers ("imagine you're blowing away the ouch"), tablet games for school-age
• Comfort positioning: Guiding parents on how to hold their child in a secure, comfortable position (NOT restraint — secure comfort)
• Pacing: "Look at me, take three big breaths, and on the third breath, the doctor will be done"

Recovery:

• Post-procedure comfort: sticker, small prize, or simply a story
• Debrief: "You were so brave. That was hard and you did it. How do you feel now?"

After the Visit: Follow-Through

• Post-visit report to parents: "Here's what happened, what the doctor said, and what to watch for"
• Child-friendly explanation of next steps: If follow-up is needed, presented in a way that doesn't create anticipatory anxiety
• Parent well-being check: "And how are YOU doing? Do you need anything?"
